Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon yeast optional for slightly thicker bread

Instructions

Prepare the Dough:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and yeast (if using). Gradually add water and olive oil, mixing until the dough starts to come together.

Knead the Dough:

  • Knead for 5-7 minutes by hand until smooth and elastic. The dough should be tacky but not sticky.

Rest the Dough:

  • Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes to improve elasticity.

Divide and Roll:

  • Divide dough into 8 equal balls. On a floured surface, roll each ball into a thin circle or oval, about 1/8-inch thick.

Cook the Lavash:

    Skillet:

    • Preheat a skillet over medium-high heat. Place each dough piece on the skillet, cooking for 1-2 minutes per side until golden and slightly charred.

    Oven (optional):

    • Preheat oven to 450°F. Place dough on a hot pizza stone or baking sheet for 3-5 minutes, until crisp.

    Serve:

    • Stack cooked lavash and cover with a towel to keep soft until serving.

    Notes

    • For a slightly thicker lavash, include the yeast in the recipe.
    • Add seeds (like sesame or poppy) on top of the dough before cooking for extra flavor and texture.
